Fancy pants fitness performers
My shoulders are depressed.
Seriously, it's a real thing, my scapula sit nearly 2 vertebrae lower on the spine than is normal.
This makes my overhead position less than optimal.
I also picked up my fair share of shoulder injuries, starting with too much bench press at age 19, through to the demands of competing at the CrossFit Games plus the odd mountain bike and skateboard crash.
Now that I don't compete in the Sport of Fitness, I don't snatch.
Sure, it's one of the most effective ways to train power, speed and athleticism.
But it's not the BEST.
Not for me anymore at least. And it may not be for many of you. The best way is the way that works for YOU.
Luckily there are medball throws, box jumps, kettlebell & dumbbell weightlifting, sled pushes and hill sprints, all of which develop power, speed and athleticism just fine, with not only a ton less risk, but also a ton less to learn, which means getting on with the business of building muscle, losing fat, rehabbing injury, increasing mobility, improving sport performance, moving without pain, you know, like, your actual goal in the first place...... π€π
I of course still program snatches for my clients who NEED to be able to express this movement in their sport, and also for those clients who are biomechanically sound and able to express the movement safely (because itβs still a wonderful movement).
Some people may start from a compromised place, and work their way up to technical movements like the snatch.
That's great to see.
For the rest of us, the goal is fitness, not fancy pants performance.
They CAN (and maybe SHOULD) be separate.
